Cell Phones and Your Health

FIRST: The World Health Organization classified cell phone radiation as a possible carcinogen. But the FCC refused to update cell phone safety regulations that were 25 years ago.

THEN: A growing body of research began to show radiofrequency radiation can affect the nervous system, harm fertility and increase the risk of cancer following long-term exposure.

NOW: A new study raises concerns about wireless radiation’s harm to brain health and suggests potential connections to outcomes such as Alzheimer’s. We’re calling on major cell phone carriers, including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, to make sure radiofrequency radiation does not harm human health.

Despite alarm bells from scientists about possible harm from wireless radiation, billion-dollar cell phone carriers are doing little to ensure their latest technological developments are safe for human health.

EWG is meeting the moment head on and demanding major phone carriers like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile make our health and safety a priority by ensuring that radiofrequency radiation emitted by their devices doesn’t put our health in danger.

Technological advances are quickly outstripping the government’s assessment of their health risk. The government hasn’t updated cell phone radiation regulations since 1996! That’s why last year, EWG took this issue into our own hands. We reviewed all the best available science and published our own health-based limits on cell phone use.
The result? EWG’s limits are 200 to 400 times lower than what the federal government allows.

It’s clear we can’t count on government agencies to put up guard rails protecting us from these multibillion-dollar companies. So we’re going straight to the source and calling on major phone carriers to funnel the millions of dollars they spend on advertising into ensuring wireless technology isn’t a health risk.
